Kembalinya banda wakaf Masjid Besar Kauman Semarang menjadi momentum sejarah yang penting bagi masyarakat muslim Semarang. Momentum kembalinya banda wakaf tersebut menjadi titik klimaks perjuangan masyarakat muslim semarang dalam menyelesaikan masalah yang sebenarnya telah muncul seajk tahun 1980.Kembalinya banda wakaf Masjid Besar Kauman Semarang tersebut inilah yang menjadi latar belakang sejarah pendirian Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah.

Pada tanggal 6 juni 2001 Gubernur Jawa Tengah membentuk Tim Koordinasi Pembangunan Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah yang terdiri atas unsur Pemerintahan Propinsi, Majelis Ulama Indonesia, Masjid Besar Kauman Semarang, Departemen Agama, Departemen Pekerjaan Umum, Organisasi Kemasyarakatan Islam, Pemerintah Kota, dan Cendekiawan.

Tim ini yang kemudian lebih dikenal sebagai Panitia Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah (MAJT), bekerja keras menanggulangi masalah-masalah baik yang mendasar maupun teknis. Berkat niat yang luhur dan silaturahmi yang erat, dalam waktu kerja yang amat singkat keputusan-keputusan pokok sudah dapat ditentukan : status tanah, persetujuan pembiayaan dari APBD oleh DPRD Jawa Tengah, serta pemiilhan lahan tapak dan program ruang. Adalah pemilihan lahan tapak yang banyak disoroti masyarakat, karena membutuhkan luas lahan 10 hektar. Padahal tanah wakaf yang dikembalikan ke Masjid Besar Kauman Semarang terdiri atas 6 blok terpisah-pisah, dan hanya satu yang ukurannya cukup besar, mancapai 10 hektar. Lahan di Jl. Gajah yang cukup besar ini terletak sekitar 800 m dari Jl. Arteri Soekarno Hatta yang merupakan jala besar.

Pada bulan September 2001, Panitia berhasil menerbitkan sebuah dokumen teknis yang menjadi kerangaka acuan kerja bagi para peserta sayembara. Masjid ini diharapkan menjadi pusat pelayanan ibadah dan kemasyarakatan, sekaligus pusat pelayanan ibadah dan kemasyarakatan, sekaligus pusat pendiidkan dakwah islam ,silaturahmi dan komunikasi dunia islam selain itu masjid tersebut juga diharapkan dapat menjadi pusat inovasi pemikiran islam dan pusat pemberdayaan ekonomi umat. Lingkup pelayanan yang dikehendaki adalah Jawa Tengah, bertempat di Semarang. Karena skala ukurannya tersebut, Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah harus pula menjadi tuntunan atau landmark kota. Untuk itu bentuk masjid haruslah mengikuti perkembangan jaman sekaligus menyiratkan jiwa napas Jawa Tengah.

Pembangunan masjid tersebut dimulai pada hari Jumat, 6 September 2002 yang ditandai dengan pemasangan tiang pancang perdana yang dilakukan Menteri Agama Ri, Prof. Dr. H. Said Agil Husen al-Munawar, KH. MA Sahal Mahfudz dan Gubernur Jawa Tengah, H. Mardiyanto. Pemasangan tiang pancang pertama tersebut juga dihadiri oleh tujuh duta besar dari Negara-negara sahabat, yaitu Arab Saud, Uni Emirat Arab, Qatar, Kuwait, Mesir, Palestina, dan Abu Dabi. Dengan demikian mata dan perhatian dunia internasional pun mendukung dibangunnya Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah tersebut. Sebelum dilakukan pemasangan tiang pancang tersebut, dilaksanakanlah pengajian dan mujahadah oleh kiai-kiai karismatik seperti KH. Munif Zuhri dari Girikusumo, KH. Baqoh Arifin dari Kajoran, KH. Habib Luthfi dari Pekalongan dan lain-lain.

Akhirnya umat islam di Jawa tengah patut berbangga bahwa pada akhirnya mereka dapat memiliki masjid agung yang megah dan indah, sarat keistimewaan dibanding masjid-masjid lain, yakni Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah (MAJT) yang terletak di Jl. Gajah Raya Kelurahan Sambirejo di Kota Semarang. Masjid Agung Jawa Tengah diresmikan pada tanggal 14 November 2006 oleh Presiden RI Susilo Bambang Yudoyono. Masjid dengan luas areal tanah 10 Hektare dan luas bangunan induk untuk shalat 7.669 meter persegi tersebut bargaya arsitektur perpaduan antara Jawa, Jawa Tengah dan Yunani. Gaya Timur tengah terlihat dari kubah dan empat minaretnya. Gaya Jawa tampak dari bentuk tanjungan dibawah kubah utama. Sedangkan gaya Yunani tampak pada 25 Pilar-pilar kolosium yang dipadu dengan kaligrafi yang indah.

Meskipun baru diresmikan pada tanggal 14 Nopember 2006, namun masjid ini telah difungsikan untuk ibadah jauh sebelum tanggal tersebut. Masjid megah ini telah digunakan ibadah shalat jum’at untuk pertama kalinya pada tanggal 19 Maret 2004 dengan Khatib Drs. H. M. Chabib Thoha, MA, (Kakanwil Depag Jawa Tengah).
